CARB has put together a Concept Paper for Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Rulemaking for the state of California. This could have profound impact on both the production of Biodiesel AND Renewable Diesel in California and the rest of the US.
In this draft they conclude first, that any blend of renewable diesel meeting ASTM D975 08ea1 would be considered NOx emissions neutral. Secondly they are recommending that in order to mitigate the NOx emissions of biodiesel that it be mixed with anywhere from 3-4 parts of RENEWABLE DIESEL !
For this proposed rulemaking CARB has conducted rigorous studies of both renewable diesel and biodisel emissions and has created a draft proposal regarding their recommendations.
Details can be found at http://www.arb.ca.gov/fuels/diesel/altdiesel/biodiesel.htm.
There are two main objectives of this rulemaking:
• Support the goals of AB 32 and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard by permitting and encouraging greater use of biodiesel and renewable diesel; and
• Maintain or improve air quality.
